few months ago i started this series called color piel, skin color, for which i photographed dark skinned people with a band aid in their forearm. the point of the whole work is, why "skin color" is understood as a color and not as a concept that covers a large gamma of tones. actually even the band aid box promotes the product as "skin colored", and of course this is just one example. here are the first two portrais i've made so far of haitian djimy and american stephany, both living here in chile.

  1. Oh my god I love this project, I am so terribly guilty of using the term "skin color" as one specific color instead of the concept of it being a large gamma of colors, and only very recently when I was translating "cream" color for a friend and I used the word for skin color in Mandarin.

This is very good education, etta, thank you!

    1. i'm so you glad you liked it katie! it happens to all of us, as a finnish photographer meeri koutaniemi said in a documentary, as a photographer she doesn't look for criticizing as she also forms part of the people her work might has a target to criticize. no one us is above this human condition. thank you so much for your kind words!

  2. Que idea interesante! la primera foto sobre todo me parece genial y muy potente en el mensaje! debe ser porque la de la chica tiene anillos y aros y eso distrae un poco, pero ambas muy lindas!
    saludos :)

    1. muchas gracias sofía! a mi también me gusta más la primera imagen ya que es más pura, y los profesores de hecho me criticaron lo mismo que mencionar tú, los elementos distrayentes de la segunda. saludos!

it would be so hard to find normal people modelling for photography here in malaysia, they would just end up looking awkward :/
